Labrador Retriever gundog training: an age by age plan
The Labrador Retriever is the most popular gundog in the UK, and for good reason. Biddable, food motivated and eager to please, it takes to structured training with real enthusiasm.
Temperament in training
Steady, sociable and keen to work, though its enthusiasm for food and retrieving can tip into over excitement if steadiness is not built in early.
The plan
8 to 16 weeks
Settling in, gentle handling and the first foundations of steadiness and whistle sounds.
4 to 6 months
Building recall, an easy carry and delivery, and calm heelwork on lead.
6 to 12 months
Introducing water, single marked retrieves and simple memory work.
12 to 24 months
Steadiness under real distraction, distance handling and multiple retrieves.
Working age
Working test and grading level work: blinds, cover and off lead discipline.
Field fitness for the Labrador Retriever
- Labradors can gain weight easily, so keep an eye on body condition alongside a good training routine.
- Warm, humid days call for shorter sessions and plenty of water, as the breed can overheat quickly.
- Check ears and feet after every field or water session, and ask a vet about hip and elbow scoring before starting serious retrieve work.
- A short, calm cool down after training helps a dog settle rather than staying wound up.
General guidance only. Talk to your vet about anything specific to your dog.
