Why it matters
Calm heelwork on lead is used constantly, from walking out to a peg to moving between exercises at a working test. Teaching it early, with plenty of reward, avoids a lifetime of pulling.
Set up
- Use a comfortable slip lead or well fitted collar.
- Have small treats ready in a pocket or bag.
Run the drill
- 1Start walking with the puppy on a loose lead beside your leg.
- 2Reward it regularly for staying in position without pulling.
- 3Stop occasionally and ask for a sit, rewarding a puppy that settles beside you.
Make it harder
- Add gentle changes of pace and direction.
- Practise heelwork past mild distractions such as another calm dog at a distance.
- Extend the length of the walk gradually.
Common mistakes
- Allowing pulling to be rewarded by moving forward: stop the moment the lead goes tight and only continue once it is loose again.
- Making sessions too long for a young puppy: keep it short and positive, several times a day rather than one long walk.
- Forgetting to reward good position: mark and reward heelwork often, not just at the end of the walk.
