Golden Retriever gundog training: an age by age plan
The Golden Retriever brings a soft, sensitive nature to gundog work, responding best to calm, reward based handling rather than pressure.
Temperament in training
Gentle and eager to please, though its sensitivity means harsh correction can knock confidence, while patient, positive training brings out a genuinely willing worker.
The plan
8 to 16 weeks
Calm foundations: settling, gentle heelwork and the first whistle sounds.
4 to 6 months
Building a happy recall and an easy, relaxed carry and delivery.
6 to 12 months
Confidence in water and the beginnings of memory work.
12 to 24 months
Marking, steadiness to a thrown dummy and distance whistle work.
Working age
Working test level marking, blind handling and off lead heelwork.
Field fitness for the Golden Retriever
- Golden Retrievers can be sensitive to heat, so plan water and field sessions for cooler parts of the day in summer.
- Regular coat checks after cover work help catch grass seeds and tangles before they become a problem.
- Ask a vet about hip and elbow scoring and general joint health before starting heavier retrieve work.
- Watch body condition closely, as steady weight gain can creep up unnoticed.
General guidance only. Talk to your vet about anything specific to your dog.
