Why it matters
How a dog is introduced to water shapes its confidence for years. A slow, positive first experience in shallow, calm water builds a dog that is happy to swim when the time comes, rather than one that is nervous of it.
Set up
- Choose a warm day and shallow, calm water with easy access and a gently sloping bed.
- Check the water is clean and free of strong currents, weirs or sudden deep drop offs.
Run the drill
- 1Walk the dog to the water's edge on a lead and let it paddle at its own pace.
- 2Encourage it a little further in with a favourite toy or treat, never forcing it.
- 3Praise any voluntary movement into deeper water and let the dog choose when to come out.
Make it harder
- Encourage a short swim once the dog is confident wading.
- Introduce a floating dummy for a simple retrieve from shallow water.
- Try a different, unfamiliar water source once the first is comfortable.
Common mistakes
- Forcing or carrying a reluctant dog into water: always let the dog choose to go in itself.
- Choosing cold water or a cold day for the first introduction: warm weather and warm water make early sessions far easier.
- Ignoring signs of tiredness or cold: keep first sessions short and dry the dog thoroughly afterwards.
