Hungarian Vizsla gundog training: an age by age plan
The Hungarian Vizsla is an affectionate, high energy HPR breed that forms a close bond with its handler and works best with plenty of engagement.
Temperament in training
Sensitive and people focused, thriving on close teamwork, though it can become anxious or overexcited without enough physical and mental outlet.
The plan
8 to 16 weeks
Gentle bonding, foundation steadiness and the first stop whistle sounds.
4 to 6 months
Recall and the first free ranging, natural pointing games.
6 to 12 months
Confidence in water and simple memory retrieves.
12 to 24 months
Quartering into the wind, distance whistle work and delivery under distraction.
Working age
Working test level handling, marking with multiple throwers and back casts.
Field fitness for the Hungarian Vizsla
- Vizslas have thin coats and little body fat, so they can feel the cold more than other gundog breeds, especially after water work.
- Check feet and skin for grass seeds and ticks after every session in cover.
- Ask a vet about joint health and general conditioning before starting demanding field or water work.
- Build fitness and confidence gradually, as this breed can overdo things if allowed to.
General guidance only. Talk to your vet about anything specific to your dog.
