Why it matters
A delivery that is perfect in the garden can fall apart the moment there is something more interesting nearby. Testing it against real distractions is what makes it reliable on the day.
Set up
- Choose a location with mild, controlled distractions such as a calm second dog at a distance.
- Use a scented dummy occasionally to raise the value of what is being carried.
Run the drill
- 1Send the dog for a retrieve with a distraction visible but not close enough to cause a problem.
- 2Call the dog in and ask for the usual sit and present.
- 3Reward calmly and consistently, then gradually work distractions a little closer over several sessions.
Make it harder
- Add a second handler nearby who ignores the dog completely.
- Practise the retrieve with food or a toy left, out of reach, near the return path.
- Introduce the exercise on ground that smells strongly of other animals.
Common mistakes
- Increasing distraction too quickly: if the dog fails, go back a step and rebuild confidence before pushing on.
- Reacting loudly to a poor delivery: stay calm and simply reset the exercise.
- Skipping the basics under pressure: if delivery breaks down, return to short, easy retrieves for a session or two.
