Working Cocker Spaniel gundog training: an age by age plan
The working Cocker Spaniel is a bundle of energy built for covering ground. Quartering and flushing come naturally, but that same drive needs channelling into a controlled pattern early.
Temperament in training
Busy, bold and full of drive, thriving on having a job to do. Without structure, that same energy can turn into wide running or a lack of steadiness.
The plan
8 to 16 weeks
Settling the energy: gentle steadiness games and the first stop whistle sounds.
4 to 6 months
Recall and an eager, willing carry and delivery.
6 to 12 months
Introducing quartering and confidence in water.
12 to 24 months
Quartering into the wind, sit to flush steadiness and delivery under distraction.
Working age
Working test level cover work, back casts and off lead discipline.
Field fitness for the Working Cocker Spaniel
- Long, floppy ears need regular checking and cleaning, especially after work in cover or water.
- Check feet, coat and ears thoroughly for grass seeds and ticks after every session in longer grass.
- Working Cockers are prone to running lean when very active, so monitor weight and condition alongside training load.
- A vet check is worthwhile before starting serious quartering or water work, particularly for joint and general fitness.
