Why it matters
A blind retrieve asks the dog to trust the handler completely, since it has no memory of the fall to rely on. This is one of the most advanced pieces of gundog handling and should only be attempted once stops and casts are already reliable.
Set up
- Place a dummy out in the open without the dog seeing it go down.
- Bring the dog to a known starting point some distance away.
Run the drill
- 1Send the dog out on a straight line towards the area of the dummy.
- 2Stop the dog with a pip if it drifts off line, then give a cast to correct its direction.
- 3Continue directing with stops and casts until the dog finds the dummy.
Make it harder
- Increase the distance of the blind retrieve.
- Introduce a change of direction partway through the retrieve.
- Practise blinds with light cover between the dog and the dummy.
Common mistakes
- Attempting blinds before stop and cast are reliable: go back to basics rather than pushing an unready dog.
- Over handling a dog that is doing fine on its own: let it work when the line is good, and only step in when it drifts.
- Getting frustrated at a missed cast: reset calmly and shorten the distance rather than repeating the same failure.
