English Springer Spaniel gundog training: an age by age plan
The English Springer Spaniel is a tireless, methodical worker in cover, built to quarter ground thoroughly and flush game close to the gun.
Temperament in training
Affectionate and biddable at home, but a genuinely driven worker in the field who needs clear structure to stay within range.
The plan
8 to 16 weeks
Foundation steadiness games and the first stop whistle sounds.
4 to 6 months
Recall and a settled sit and present on delivery.
6 to 12 months
Introducing quartering and water retrieve basics.
12 to 24 months
Quartering into the wind and sit to flush steadiness.
Working age
Working test level marking, blind handling and off lead heelwork.
Field fitness for the English Springer Spaniel
- Check ears regularly, as the breed's long ears and enthusiasm for cover and water make them prone to picking up debris and moisture.
- Inspect feet and coat for grass seeds and ticks after every session in rough ground.
- Build up field fitness gradually, particularly stamina for a full session of quartering.
- Speak to a vet about joint health and general conditioning before starting demanding retrieve or water work.
General guidance only. Talk to your vet about anything specific to your dog.
