Memory retrieves: multiple marks
Ask a gundog to hold two remembered falls in mind and collect them in a sensible order.
- Time
- 12 minutes
- Level
- Intermediate
- From age
- 10 months
- Where
- Open field with two distinct throwing spots
Why it matters
Being able to hold more than one memory retrieve in mind at once is a genuine step up in difficulty and is tested at higher levels of working test and grading.
Set up
- Have two dummies ready and a helper if possible.
- Choose a delay length the dog has already managed comfortably with a single mark.
Run the drill
- 1Throw the first dummy and let the dog watch it land.
- 2Move to a new spot and throw the second dummy, again with the dog watching.
- 3After the usual delay, send the dog for one dummy, bring it back for a sit and present, then send for the second.
Make it harder
- Increase the delay before sending for either dummy.
- Vary the order in which the dog is sent so it cannot predict the pattern.
- Add gentle distraction during the delay, such as calm conversation nearby.
Common mistakes
- Introducing this before single memory retrieves are solid: go back a step if the dog seems confused.
- Sending for the wrong dummy without correction: guide the dog gently back if it heads for the wrong fall.
- Making both throws too close together in direction: keep the two falls clearly separate to start with.
